Did you know that if your car’s tires are always inflated to the proper PSI, your Lexus can remain safe on the roads in Silver Spring, MD, and you may even save money on fuel and tires? Below is a quick and easy way to check tire pressure and ensure your tires are always inflated to the proper pressure levels.

Checking Tire Pressure Silver Spring, MD

Check the Pressure on Cold Tires

Always check the pressure levels when the tires are cold. If the tires are hot, you won’t get an accurate reading. Check the pressure in the morning before you drive your car or wait about three hours or so after driving for the tires to cool down before you check the pressure.

Write Down the Recommended PSI for Each Tire

You will find the recommended PSI for each tire inside your passenger door or in your car’s owner’s manual. If the pressure levels between the front and rear tires differ, write down the PSI for each tire.

Use an Analog or Digital Tire Pressure Gauge

Use an analog or digital tire pressure gauge to check the pressure. There are various analog gauges available on the market. Some have dial faces pointing to the pressure reading, others have a bar showing the level, and there are those with a marked stick. Battery-powered digital gauges are the best, easy to use, and give an accurate reading.

Check the Pressure of Each Tire

Keep the paper with the proper PSI for each tire handy. Pick any tire, front or rear, left or right, and remove the valve cap. Press the gauge firmly onto the stem and wait a few moments for an accurate reading.

Write the gauge’s reading down next to the proper PSI on your paper. If the pressure is at the correct level, replace the valve cap. If the tire is under or over-inflated, keep the cap safely in your pocket. Repeat the process until you’ve checked the pressure of all four tires.

Compare the Readings to the Recommended PSI

Compare the readings you took and wrote down against the recommended pressure level for each tire. If pressure is lower than the recommended level, inflate the tire by firmly pressing an air compressor nozzle onto the tire air valve. Hold the nozzle in place for at least 20 seconds and recheck the reading. If necessary, add more air to reach the required level.

If the tire is overinflated, use your tire pressure gauge and press down on the metal pin in the valve stem to release air. Let a bit of the air out and check the level. If it’s still too high, do it again until the correct PSI is reached. Remember to replace the valve cap.
