DARCARS Lexus of Silver Spring

Oct 7, 2022

There’s nothing more annoying on a hot day than getting into your car, feeling the heat, turning on the air conditioning, and only feeling even hotter air blow out onto your face. When you’re in this situation, there are a couple of different potential causes. If you find your car AC not working, don’t worry! Your Lexus dealer can help to fix it and give you cold air again. So, don’t hesitate to bring it in!

Leaking Refrigerant

The AC unit in your car works by chilling the air with a refrigerant liquid, called freon. This liquid is contained in the AC unit and passes through pipes that connect to each other with O-rings. These O-rings are made of a malleable rubber material that can degrade over time. If they degrade too much, they lose the ability to make the AC unit watertight, and the refrigerant can leak.

So, if you feel completely hot air when you turn on the AC, this is a likely cause. Some people might think they can simply add more refrigerant to replace the refrigerant that has leaked out, but that’s not the case. Adding more refrigerant only postpones the problem. You need to get the unit checked out by qualified Lexus mechanics.

Condenser Blockage

One of the parts that works to give you cool air when you need it in your car is the condenser. The condenser cools the refrigerant fluid that has already been used to cool down the air in the cabin. Since the condenser is located at the front of the vehicle just behind the grille, it’s especially vulnerable to being blocked by dirt, rocks, leaves, or any other debris that flies off of the road.

A sign that your condenser might be blocked is that you turn on the air conditioning and only feel slightly cool air when you should be feeling icy cold air. If this is the case, Lexus technicians can fairly simply clean out the condenser so that air passes through it uninhibited by debris.

Damaged Motors

Your car’s AC unit features electric fans that blow the cold air through the cabin. Without the fans, there can be plenty of cool air in the unit that just can’t make it out to you where you need it. And there are several things that might cause your fans to fail.

Just like in other electric motors, cables can fray and fail, or the fan’s fuses can blow or the resistor may fail. But Lexus technicians can fix all of these problems!
